Speech Pathology FAQs for Parents

Q: When should my child see a speech pathologist?
A speech pathologist may be helpful if you have concerns about your child’s speech clarity, language development, understanding, literacy, stuttering, social communication or overall communication skills.

A: Do I need a referral?
A referral is generally not required for private speech pathology services. A referral may be required if you are accessing services through certain Medicare pathways.

Q: What happens at the first appointment?
Your speech pathologist will discuss your concerns, gather background information and assess your child’s communication needs. Recommendations may include further assessment, therapy or strategies to use at home.

Q: How often is therapy?
Therapy frequency depends on the child’s needs and goals. Sessions are commonly weekly or fortnightly, but recommendations are individualised.

Q: Do you accept NDIS funding?
Yes. Sound It Out Speech Pathology is a registered NDIS provider and can support eligible participants with assessment, therapy and communication goals.
